Memorial highway, bridge to be dedicated Friday

The public is invited to attend a dedication ceremony of the Lance Corporal Benjamin Carman Memorial Highway and the Captain Matthew Nielson Memorial Bridge Friday, May 24, at 10 am at the Iowa DOT maintenance garage at 610 N. Pinet St in Jefferson.

Highway 4 between Highways 30 and 141 will be designated at the Benjamin Carmal Memorial Highway. The Highway 30 bridge over the N. Raccoon River near J Ave west of Jefferson will be designated at the CPT Matthew Nielson Memorial Bridge.

Signs at each location will be installed that afternoon.

Both LCpl Carman and CPT Nielson were raised in Greene County and killed in action in Iraq during the War on Terror. Carman was killed April 6, 2004, in Ramadi, and Nielson was killed June 29, 2011, in Badrah.

“We are grateful to the DOT for expediting the process in time for Memorial Day, a day we remember all our veterans who have given the ultimate sacrifice for our freedoms,” Greene County veterans affairs director Mike Bierl said.

Cake and refreshments will be served after the ceremony.
